Metamorfosis

Metamorfosis

As música mexicana’s modern practitioners hone styles like corridos tumbados and sad sierreño, the plurality of male voices tend to overpower those of the women often referenced on their albums. With the post-Obsessed album Metamorfosis, Yahritza Y Su Esencia make for more than a female-fronted exception, but rather a standard-elevating exemplar that makes many of their peers sound downright templated and rote by comparison. Now capable of crafting songs as intimate and surrealistic as “01-800” and as lush and banda-sized as “Oídos Sordos”, the trio further supplement their profile with the cumbia machinations of “Brilla” with Snow Tha Product. As before, the lyrics aim straight for the heart (and sometimes the jugular), with Yahritza’s impassioned vocal delivery imbuing each song with relatable resonance. She sorts through the romantic wreckage of “Que Te Costo” and bursts with regret from the enormity of love’s absence on “Adios”. The emotional baggage checked on “Para Qué Lastimarme” is remarkably oversized, as is the anxious late-night longing of the doomscrolling denouement “Me Lastimó”.
