The Presets Essentials

The Presets have consistently broadened the church of dance music. After meeting as students at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Julian Hamilton (vocals, keyboards) and Kim Moyes (drums, keyboards) merged synth-pop and techno on early tracks like 2004’s “Girl and the Sea”, before bringing live electronics to the attention of rock fans with their 2007 breakout “My People”. “We were really just trying to do our version of ‘Thunderstruck’ by AC/DC,” Hamilton later told Apple Music. The song’s crossover appeal made it a multi-platinum hit in Australia and earned the duo six ARIAs for its parent album, Apocalypso. Apart from the pair’s impeccable production and programming instincts, further successes like 2012’s “Ghosts” continued to harness Hamilton’s darkly striking vocals in memorable ways. The Presets have also kept a close eye on what’s happening in dance music, collaborating with Sydney producer Golden Features on a clubby 2019 EP that yielded the gold-selling single “Paradise”.
