Songwriter hemlocke springs has a recognizably raspy voice and quirky, unpolished approach to '80s-inspired synthesizer pop, both of which helped her go viral with her first self-released songs. After her debut single, "gimme all ur luv," crossed the million-streams mark within weeks of its release in 2022, she had an even bigger viral hit with the apprehension anthem "girlfriend" later the same year. A medical student at the time, she quickly followed the success of "girlfriend" with songs including 2023's "stranger danger!" that doubled down on darker new wave/post-punk inspirations. She released her debut EP, going...going...GONE!, before the end of the year. Her whimsical full-length debut, 2026's the apple tree under the sea, was written and recorded with BURNS.
