In the early ‘70s, Hall & Oates were still searching for their breakout sound, which led them to teaming up with producer/songwriter Todd Rundgren for this 1974 album. Veering away from the duo’s soulful roots, War Babies explores a prog-rock style that’s singular in the band’s catalogue. They concoct some searing glam grooves on “Beanie G. and the Rose Tatoo”, get into spacey, swirling funk on “70’s Scenario” and strike a woozy balance between noisy effects and muscular rhythms on the epic “Screaming Through December”.
