Cast Essentials

Britpop hitmakers Cast emerged from Liverpool with one of the best-selling debut albums in Polydor history, All Change. The bright, hook-filled tunes were a sharp rebuke to the grungier sounds emerging stateside, and resonated deeply with British listeners—all four singles, “Alright”, “Walkaway”, “Sandstorm” and “Fine Time”, landed in the Top 20 on the UK charts. Lead singer John Power’s distinctive voice cut through layers of simple-seeming pop-rock sounds, never too clean or polished—but appealing to pop fans all the same. The band’s hot streak continued with follow-up Mother Nature Calls, which included hits like “Free Me”, a stadium-sized jam, and “I’m So Lonely”, which, in keeping with the band’s upbeat sound, wasn’t quite as dark as it might seem. The band took an extended hiatus after their impact wavered in the early aughts before reuniting in 2010 to release Troubled Times, which included the almost country-sounding “Troubled Thoughts” and “See That Girl,” a jangly throwback to their ’90s heyday.
