Led by Brazilian guitarist/vocalist Prika Amaral, all-female thrash squad Nervosa crank up the darkness and brutality with a concept album about the dangers of the internet age. Slave Machine is a raging indictment of social media, phone addiction and the disinformation industry. The scathing title track makes Amaral’s point over a vicious squall of guitars: “Blind and controlled/We keep losing our souls/Selling our dreams/Turning to a piece of the slave machine.” The crushing, mechanised “Ghost Notes” takes on social media-induced depression. The extreme metal hybrid “Learn or Repeat” warns us to learn from the mistakes of our digital habits, lest we be doomed to repeat them.
