Kobie Dee Essentials

Gomeroi rapper Kobie Dee reflects on his life with unflinching honesty, never holding back in fear of an unflattering moment. His 2019 single “Jody” recounted losing his titular cousin to an armed robbery gone wrong. Dee signed to Briggs’ Bad Apples label soon after and his storytelling only grew sharper, calling out a cold world on both 2019’s “This Life” and 2020’s “Same Old Shit”. He then unpacked domestic violence from a close vantage point on 2021’s “About A Girl”, and enlisted Stan Walker to bolster 2023’s “Father’s Eyes”, a confessional about responding to his lack of a male role model by repeating those same mistakes with his own child. That’s not his only collaboration of note: in 2024 alone, Dee teamed up with Malyangapa-Barkindji MC Barkaa on her forceful cut “Big Mood”, and rising Yorta Yorta, Djadja Wurrung, Kalkadoon and Yirendali singer/rapper Miss Kaninna on his own track “Lifetime”. After marking that many years on Earth with his 2024 EP Chapter 26, he expanded his focus to address wider injustices endured by Australia’s Indigenous people on “Statistic”, and celebrate First Nations culture with the empowering “Warriors & Storytellers”.
