My First Kick

My First Kick

When KickFlip debuted in early 2025, the boy squad led with a playful, hip-hop-driven sound that fell somewhere between the crash-bang intensity of their JYP Entertainment seniors Stray Kids and the edgy bounce of SM superstars NCT DREAM. By the end of their first year as a group, however, the idol rookies had already shifted into a bright, urgent pop-rock sound, connecting with tracks like “Band-Aid” and “My First Love Song”. My First Kick, their fourth mini album, is a continuation of that rock-driven expression, harnessed for a sonic story about ageing into adulthood. “Eye-Poppin’” is a frenzied confessional about a first love. “Twenty” is an anthemic tribute to the end of one’s teen years. “Stup!d” evokes a turn-of-the-millennium punk energy in its embrace of being sincere. But thematically, My First Kick is firmly set in the here and the now. “Scroll” outlines the specific agony of having a crush in the age of smartphones (“Chasing only your traces/I keep on scrolling on scrolling”), while the vocally driven fan track “My Direction” keeps things specific in its dedication to WeFlip, the group’s fandom. “If you're worried/Hold my hand,” KickFlip croon, grounding their art in a parasocial purpose.
