Finally following up 2013’s chart-topping Asymmetry, Karnivool prove just as precise and considered as ever on their fourth album. Opener “Ghost” reintroduces the Perth quintet’s satisfying dynamics, graduating from delicate to turbulent as vocalist Ian Kenny (who also fronts Birds of Tokyo) remains equally passionate and melodic. Jon Stockman’s robust basslines remain a clear standout, as do the slippery, searching melodies of lead guitarist Drew Goddard. Unusual time signatures still abound—as heard on tracks like “Aozora” and “Remote Self Control”—and the band embraces the additional dimensions of guest players with guitarist Guthrie Govan anchoring “Reanimation”, strings sweeping through “Opal” and Grant Scroggie lending dramatic bagpipes to the final stretch of closer “Salva”. Reuniting with repeat producer Forrester Savell, Karnivool craft spacious, arty rock that’s also very accessible. As Kenny sings about restlessness and patience on the expansive eight-minute centrepiece “Conversations”, it confirms a confident return after more than a dozen years out of the spotlight.
