Moby: Influences
Moby broke into techno with a hard-hitting sound inspired by rave anthems like Joey Beltram's “Energy Flash”, but his debut single was a slinky hip-hop cut closer in spirit to M/A/R/R/S' “Pump Up the Volume”. As a teenager, he played in punk bands and listened to noisy groups like Public Image Ltd.; no wonder he'd go on to cover Joy Division, channelling their sullen vocals and searing guitars.
