The Hu

The Hu is a rock band that fuses heavy metal with the traditional Mongolian throat singing of their native land. ∙ Formed in 2016, the group—whose name refers to the ancient Hunnu empire, aka the Huns—use old-school Mongolian instruments along with modern bass and drums. ∙ The Hu’s first video, 2018’s “Yuve Yuve Yu,” was a viral sensation that quickly racked up millions of views. ∙ In 2019, they became the first Mongolian band to top a Billboard chart, when “Wolf Totem” reached No. 1 on the Hard Rock Digital Song Sales list. ∙ The Hu were praised by Mongolian President Khaltmaagiin Battulga during a 2019 meeting, and later that year they were honored with the Order of Genghis Khan for promoting their culture. ∙ Their debut album, 2019’s The Gereg, was a Top 5 hit on Billboard’s Hard Rock chart and a No. 20 Top Rock hit. ∙ Star Wars fans since childhood, The Hu were asked to write the song “Sugaan Essena” for the 2019 video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.
