On their 10th studio album and full-length debut for legendary label Sub Pop, drone overlords sunn O))) return to their roots as a duo. In fact, this self-titled release marks the first time guitarists Greg Anderson and Stephen O’Malley are the only musicians on a sunn O))) album. Recorded in the duo’s original home of the Pacific Northwest, lengthy compositions like “XXANN” and the field-recording-enhanced “Mindrolling” take on the majesty of the forest and firs, guiding the listener on a nature walk through an ominous, amplified underworld. “Does Anyone Hear Like Venom?” is a nod to the unhinged English trio who pioneered black metal (and coined the term) back in the early ’80s. Like so much of sunn O)))’s music, the song itself is slow, low and doomy. With an appropriately abstract album cover painted decades ago by Mark Rothko, sunn O))) is the band’s defining statement.
