In a Space Outta Dub

In a Space Outta Dub

Among the various styles that have inspired George Evelyn and his long-running Nightmares On Wax project, reggae remains a foundational one. Rooted in exposure to regional UK soundsystems at a young age, the presence of dub sonics on albums like 2006’s In a Space Outta Sound helped earn him a certain reputation among knowing heads. Two decades later, he rightfully commemorates this moment with a deluxe edition, bolstered by a 40-minute set remixed by none other than Adrian Sherwood. The On-U Sound Records founder and prolific producer’s genre footprint is downright massive, with a discography dating back to the late ’70s, so it makes sense that Evelyn would tap him for this impeccably chill endeavour. Those familiar with the original NoW album will recognise its contents floating freely amid the reverb, bass and echoes arranged by the masterful Sherwood. Beginning with the Rhodes-accented melody of “You Bliss” and extending into later sequenced gems like the vocally sublime “Sweeter Still”, these original elements provide familiarity as the producer’s inventive mixing-board techniques repurpose them with seeming ease. Yet the lifelong dub practitioner clearly went to great pains here to make this companion album something as much his as anything else in his catalogue, as evidenced by the cocooning warmth of “Positive Touch” and the expansive adventuring behind “Looking at You Dub”. Through the uplifting vibrations of “On the Seven Seas Dub” and the shimmering noir of “Nyabinghi Dub”, Sherwood’s mixes mature the material, almost as if to meet Evelyn’s own artistic growth over the past 20 years.
