In the artist’s words: Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. James Brown came to Nigeria when I was 12. I climbed a tree outside the stadium to watch the show, hearing, “Say it loud. I’m black & I’m proud.” Little did I know that years later I would be opening up for him in NYC as the frontman of Antibalas! What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? Fela Kuti, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Vol. 5 I grew up listening to Fela Kuti as a young boy living in Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria just minutes from Kalakuta. My uncle took me to see him perform when I was 12, and I've been hooked ever since. What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? I performed at the Apollo Theater for the first time as lead singer of Antibalas for the Daptone Super Soul Review headlining with Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings and Charles Bradley, the night Sharon was Grammy-nominated!
