A collection of demos, B-sides and recovered experiments, Rare and Deadly amasses a decade’s worth of odds ’n’ sods taken from A Place to Bury Strangers lead vocalist Oliver Ackermann’s personal vault. What makes the collection special—and perhaps maddening—is that each format has a different tracklist and not all songs appear on all versions. For example, the pulsing “Song for Girl from Macedonia” and noise-blasted “Everyone’s the Same” are also available on physical formats, but the tracks “Energy” and “Resurrected” are exclusive to this digital version. Meanwhile, the broken post-punk groover “Acid Rain” also appears on the CD and the cassette, but not the LP. The melancholic “Where Are We Now” also appears on the LP and CD, but not on the cassette. As such, no version is complete: Rare and Deadly is a Choose Your Own Adventure for the ears.
