Antonio Carlos e Jocafi

Antônio Carlos e Jocafi are a Brazilian singer/songwriter duo. Since 1969, the pair have made a career from their trademark "sambão-joia," melding sunny, polished, pop with acoustic samba, sacred Afro-Brazilian rhythms, and hooky melodies across MPB and Brazilian funk, and soul. Mudei De Idéia, their 1971 RCA debut, charted, as did 1973's Antonio Carlos E Jocafi, 1974's Definitivamente, and 1978's Elas Por Elas. Further, several of the duo's compositions became telenovela themes for Minha Doce Namorada (1971), O Primeiro Amor (1972), and Cuca Legal (1975). After 1980's Trabalho De Base, they released 1984's Pássaro Fugido, 1986's Feitiço Moleque, and 1999's Samba, Prazer e Mistério. In 2022 while visiting Brazil, Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad were introduced to the duo by Baiana System's Beto Barreto. The Americans invited the Bahian duo to Los Angeles to perform at their club and to record. The ensuing album, Antonio Carlos & Jocafi JID026 was released in April 2026.
