Future Present Past

A free-jazz collective operating functionally as a quintet, Irreversible Entanglements had roughly a decade’s worth of releases under their unifying belt prior to this release. The cosmic, transcendental properties found to various degrees on the ensemble’s four preceding albums return purposefully for this, their fifth studio outing. Recorded at the world-famous Van Gelder Studio, birthplace of A Love Supreme and other spiritual jazz classics, Future Present Past addresses the proverbial “now” with lessons and notions informed by either side of current time. Once again, avant-poet Camae “Moor Mother” Ayewa serves as a vocal conduit for the unit’s improvisational energy, encouraging mesmeric performances from trumpeter Aquiles Navarro and saxophonist Keir Neuringer, and harnessing the rhythmic force of bassist Luke Stewart and drummer Tcheser Holmes. Tempest and tumult erupt on “Vibrate Higher”, while “The Messenger” carefully controls its chaotic core in a testament to the players’ finely honed skills. In furtherance of a globally minded mission, Latin cultural elements come into play on “Panamanian Fight Song” and “Juntos Vencemos”, the latter with assistance from Helado Negro.
