The '80s were a great time to be in love—especially if you loved music. Power ballads like Foreigner's "I Want to Know What Love Is" and Journey's "Open Arms" showed off rockers' tender side; soul-pop megastars (Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson and beyond) gave good love and let their passionate vocals fly. New Wavers including Yaz and Howard Jones got in on the act with synth-flecked paeans to Cupid's charms, while lite-pop stars Air Supply and Christopher Cross displayed a firm romantic resolve. Soundtrack smashes, meanwhile, sprinkled Hollywood glitter into the mix: it was impossible not to get swept up in Berlin's longing "Take My Breath Away" and Chris de Burgh's "The Lady in Red".
