“This mix is in honour of every queer space I’ve had the pleasure of playing in,” Half Queen tells Apple Music. “For all the Black, brown, Indigenous sweeties I’ve shared a dance floor with. I wouldn’t be a DJ, let alone the person I am, without my international chosen family.” The Aotearoa New Zealand artist’s Pride mix is all about the in-between moments during Pride. “The pres, the afters, the on-the-ways…liminal intimate spaces between the landing moments, preparing the body for the excitement and celebration ahead,” they say. Singling out a favourite moment, they highlight the MA Nguzu edit of “Enemy” by Kelela, as both a representation of their own experiences—and community more broadly. “The ability to create a world in a song so purely then continue to evolve the original work, recontextualise it, rework it, release, repeat. This endless unfurling outward and reinvention is the perfect microcosm of the queer community.”
