Solve the Mysteries of Firmament

Now with ray tracing on Mac with M3 and M4.

Where the heck is everybody? That’s just one of many questions you’re likely to have after waking up in a steampunk capsule in the enigmatic adventure game Firmament.

The female apparition who welcomes you to this world offers few answers. Looks like you’ll have to solve these mysteries on your own—which is no surprise: Firmament was crafted by the creators of the legendary game Myst, a pioneer of first-person puzzling.

What we love: Discovering cool ways to use the Adjunct, the laser-rope-firing gauntlet you strap on after waking. Connect it to the myriad machines scattered around the planet to activate elevators, haul blocks of ice across mountain ravines, pilot colossal vehicles, and raise structures from their watery graves.

Quick tip: Can’t recall if you’ve already visited a room or tinkered with a machine? Your ghostly companion’s running commentary is useful, but so is her silence: She’s chatty only when you’ve entered a new place.

Meet the creator: Cyan Worlds is best known for making the landmark adventure games Myst and Riven. The team has evolved its signature first-person gameplay through crowdfunded projects like Firmament and 2016’s Obduction.
