My App Review: Highly Recommended

Duolingo is a fantastic app for learning languages that makes studying fun and accessible for everyone. Personally, I believe that one of its biggest strengths is its ability to keep users engaged and committed to learning the language they want to learn. They do this by having things like leaderboards, streaks, and achievements. The app itself has many widely spoken languages such as English, Chinese, Japanese, etc. But, also still takes into account the less common language options such as Welsh or Irish. Moreover, it doesn't take too long to complete a lesson, which means that you don't have to dedicate more than 15 minutes of your day if you don't want to.Some drawbacks that the app might have however, is that if you wish to learn a lot in a short period of time, you most likely will need to purchase the premium version. The premium version provides you with infinite lives and more options to help you practice, which is helpful but can also be costly if you're on a budget. Furthermore, one thing that I personally struggled with was the fact that there wasn't an in-depth explanation regarding questions you get wrong, and there weren't any tips that could help me as I would learn. To improve the app, Duolingo could have an extra section regarding tips for success and maybe adding explanations for tedious topics such as the grammar rules of the language. Something else that I would recommend is having a phonetic section for each of the words to help you know how to pronounce certain words. Lastly, reducing the prices of the premium version or having more perks for the free version could make the app further accessible for everyone. All in all, I highly recommend using Duolingo for all of your language-learning needs, but these suggestions could help make the app even better than it currently is.
Great app, with room for improvements

Duolingo is one of the best apps out there than can aid you to learn languages. Weekly leagues to motivate you to spend time to do your lessons and rank up to the next league. Ads are there after each lesson, but it is negligible (10-15s; just to keep it free)However there are some issues I’d like to highlight.Lessons: there seems to be some error such that lessons don’t load when switching Duo from the iPhone to the iPad or vice versa. The only workaround is that i have uninstalled the app from one device to be able to properly use it on the other.Ads: i did mention that the ads are short & negligible. However, the ads seemed to auto-pause itself after lesson during the “double lesson XP in 15 mins”. Now I suspect this is a bug/glitch because it happens during the double xp thing but after the 15 minutes is over, the ads doesn’t auto-pause.Leagues: like football, there are promotions and demotions. Top 10 gets promoted to the upper leagues while the bottom 3 gets demoted. The highest league is Diamond, where if you finished first, you’ll unlock “Legendary” skill. I noticed that some players who have achieved this is trying perhaps too hard to win it again (not giving other players a chance to win). Maybe pooling players who have finished #1 in Diamond together and separate them from those who haven’t would help other players to acheive the said skill.
Depends on your learning style

I liked Duo initially. Still love the cute characters. But I am going to admit it depends on your learning style as well. I think some people love the competition to see where they fall in the ‘league’. That doesn’t do it for me. As someone who can be stressed at work and a long day can be tiring, the ‘comparison’ model doesn’t motivate me. It makes me feel bad that I fell down the league, especially when I have to do 14 hours flight travel for work and have no access to wifi for almost a whole day , then gets stressed that I only have a few hours left to open Duo. I also feel that the ‘matching game’ was initially fun, but it’s so frustrating when so many moments are just elbowing you to spend more money on in-app purchases. And I feel the game is rigged with a timer that doesn’t give you enough time… I’m always ‘almost’ there to getting my third star , and time runs out. But of course I can purchase more time. Anyway, I can see this app being great for someone who doesn’t have a whole lot of real life stressors, who doesn’t switch time zones often and who loves the competitive nature of seeing how they hold up next to other users. To me , everyone learns at their own pace, and I don’t feel motivated by the comparison model… I prefer if I did better today compared to last week.
Our mascot owl, Duo, is trading in his usual diet of mice for bugs this week. Yup, we’re squashing those pesky bugs to make the experience better for all of you.
