Not only does a subscription let you download most videos to watch offline, the app will also automatically download recommended videos for you. To tweak the quality of videos downloaded and how much storage space this feature uses, go to the settings menu in the YouTube app and tap Background & downloads > Adjust Smart downloads > Custom.
