A beautifully written book. The lack of character names was disconcerting at first, however as the book picked up the pace this ceased to matter and the characters came alive in their own right. It’s a wonderful portrayal of a society under siege and of the coercive forces that govern each persons life. They are controlled from within the family, by their friends and neighbours and by the more sinister renouncers and state forces. As the story develops I realised that much of this control, especially by the family and friends, is an attempt to safeguard their lives. The narrator in the book, looking back at the events and at her reactions to those events, gives a powerful understanding of the minds of teenagers and the sometimes opaque strategies they employ in their efforts to get by and protect themselves. The end of the book gives a most beautiful and delicately rendered of picture of family relationships. I highly recommend this book and it was superbly read (in a gorgeous accent) by Brid Brennan.

Sharoo’s recent podcast mention about binge foods being foods which you are only in control of decision 1 around, and that once you get to decision 2 with these foods, you are a goner - apologies for paraphrasing - anyway it just resonated with me so much. I listened to this audiobook on my commute this week, and decided to take time on my day off today, like a learning-day (or like a retreat day) to listen again in one sitting, to reflect & take notes, fill in many pages of the wonderful pdf provided. It was intense, but so positive & fully engaging. I plan to take a little time now to organise all the written notes & takeaways, but I feel very motivated by this learning reflective process, and feel motivated & invigorated that I am truly embarking on implementing this, my last diet. Thank you Sharoo, so much professional support & kindness in just one book!

Listened to this during Covid - 19 ‘Lockdown’.It is written and read at a wonderful pace that causes you to ponder time, could mistakenly be taken as slow but in the context it is perfect. The events throughout the book are the backdrop of news headlines from my earlier years and names and locations caused me many memories too. I feel like I am in awe of Mr Waites humanity and anti violence stance, he is a man of great qualities and of spoken fragility too, to hold him in high esteem would perhaps embarrass such a modest and humble person. This book has made me take stock of my life, to enjoy my liberty even during ‘lockdown’ that is really a burden in reality, to value more the simple things we take for granted and to love more the people around me.Mr Waite stands 6ft 7ins or 2 metres tall and his weapon to take on the world is LOVE, amazing man, thank you Terry Waite....
