GAMES WE LOVE

Gubbins

Don’t let wacky creatures mess up your spelling!

Word puzzles will never be the same now that Gubbins is here! The game’s funky critters will help – or hinder – your efforts to build words out of colourful tiles. A good Gubbin might hand you a bunch of S-tiles to make easy plurals, while a nasty one might zap your letters right off the board. See how many points you can score... and choose your Gubbins wisely!

What we love: Racking up huge combos. Swipe three words in a row to activate a double score modifier, but don’t stop there: the bigger the combo, the higher the score – and it’s especially satisfying landing one right before a mischievous Gubbin wreaks havoc on the board.

The pencil Gubbin acts as a blank tile to help you form longer words. Thanks, buddy!

Quick tip: The cherry Gubbin is a great counter to the lemon Gubbin. When the lemon dumps random letters on the board, use the cherry to return them to your tray. Then play ’em however you like!

Meet the creator: Studio Folly founders Jessica Shipard and Darcy Smith wanted to make a game Smith’s mum could enjoy, so they combined their love of typography and board games to produce Gubbins. The game was partly funded by science vlogger Hank Green after he stumbled across the developers talking about it on TikTok and fell in love with the concept.
