Something sinister is going on at Sker Hotel – and if you want to get out alive, you’d better be very quiet. The macabre survival-horror game Maid of Sker sends you roaming through a stunningly detailed 19th-century manor, unlocking hidden rooms and avoiding detection by eerie masked men while you search for your sweetheart. Shhh!
What we love: The spine-tingling atmosphere. Foreboding hallways, creepy graveyards, grisly torture chambers – you definitely don’t want to spend your next vacation at this twisted estate. And the ominous audio – including the footsteps and ragged breathing of the sightless men hunting you – ratchets up the tension.
Quick tip: Hold your breath before you enter clouds of dust and smoke – one cough might alert a nearby enemy. But remember: the longer you hold your breath, the louder you’ll gasp for air when you finally inhale again. Don’t give yourself away!
Meet the creator: Developed by Wales Interactive, Maid of Sker is inspired by the country’s history and folklore – shipwrecks, ghostly apparitions and the ballad “The Maid of Sker” (or “Y Ferch o’r Sger” in Welsh). Studio co-founder David Banner decided to incorporate Welsh hymns into the game after hearing a pub performance of the song “Calon Lân,” led by his own father-in-law.
