JET LAG MYTHS VS. CIRCADIAN SCIENCE
Misleading advice on conquering jet lag — often promoted by non-experts — not only fails to help travelers but can make jet lag symptoms worse and may even cause harm.
It’s time to replace the myths with real science.
Generic sleep advice, exercise, hydration, grounding, dietary supplements, special diets, or fasting won’t solve jet lag because they don’t "reset" your circadian clock to new time zones.
THE REAL JET LAG SCIENCE
// In your brain, a circadian clock helps manage the regular rhythm of your day.
// Jet lag is caused when your sleep/wake and light/dark cycles shift too quickly for your circadian clock to keep up.
// Light is the key time cue to “reset” your circadian clock, so the correct timing of light exposure and avoidance is the only way to adjust to new time zones quickly. If your timing is wrong, it will make your jet lag worse.
WHY WE MADE TIMESHIFTER
Getting the timing right is both complex and unintuitive. We created Timeshifter to make circadian science accessible and help you apply it to conquer jet lag.
Timeshifter helps you tackle both the underlying cause of jet lag – the disruption of your circadian clock – as well as reduce the disruptive symptoms, such as insomnia, sleepiness and digestive discomfort.

I recently flew from Sydney to Bucharest & used the Timeshifter app. I complied with the plan 100% prior to flying & the only issue on the 1st leg (Sydney to DOHA - 14hr trip) was getting light when the aircraft was in darkness without disturbing sleeping passengers. When I arrived at Bucharest mid-afternoon I felt great & did a couple of hours walking around the city but couldn’t stay up until 2300hrs as the plan required. I went bed around 2130hrs & didn’t bother taking the melatonin as I knew I would sleep. Slept well & felt good the next day & following days. I rated my jet lag as ‘insignificant’ only because I couldn’t say with 100% certainty I had none. My wife & I walked for more than 10km around the city the next 2 days without any symptoms of jet lag. BTW, we are both aged 73. I have used accupressure points on previous trips but I found time shifting to be much more effective. Any tiredness I experienced at the end of the trip occurred naturally at the end of day & felt like tiredness from ‘having a big day’. I’ll certainly be using Timeshifter on my return trip to Sydney next month. It will be interesting to see how it goes as the flight duration is identical but we lose a day when we arrive back in Australia. I will add another review after my return home.

I’ve use Timeshifter for my last three return trips from Australia to Europe. I followed its recommendations quite closely. It worked brilliantly as I had almost zero jet lag in both directions for each of these three trips. I have had many previous trips to Europe without the assistance of Timeshifter and I had moderate to severe Jet lag on most of those trips.Timeshifter is not cheap, but the first use is free and if it works for you it’s worth every cent (especially given the cost of travel).I have only one negative comment. A common jet lag minimization recommendation for long-haul flights is to set your watch to your destination time zone as soon as you board the plane to help you settle into your new time zone earlier. Unfortunately, Timeshifter’s recommendations for each flight are given in terms of the departure time zone. So, if like me, you set your watch to your arrival time zone, then you must do some simple mental arithmetic on each flight to convert Timeshifter’s recommended times to your watch’s times.

I was skeptical at first, that this guide would help but to my surprise, I genuinely had no jet lag when I flew from the Southern to the Northern Hemisphere! (Albeit, we know that’s the easier journey out of the two). On the way home, I didn’t follow the suggestions as strictly as I did on the way over, and coming from Northern to Southern Hemisphere will always be more brutal but I only experienced one day of bad jet lag and was absolutely fine for the reminder of days following that. Which, I put the bad day down to me being a little lazy with the guidance. And, all I experienced was being beyond tired by 5pm and napping until 11pm, but then being able to go straight back to sleep through to the next morning when I was supposed to wake up. Highly recommend this app! This first time use was free with their first timeshift incurring no charge. I’ll absolutely be paying for the app moving forward with future trips. Thanks for your help!
It really works.

Ok, so I was sceptical but the prospect of a 3 sector trip with 2 of those 15 hour flights back to back crossing 16 timezones was just too much, so I gave it a go CBR-SYD-DOH-IAD. The app prepares you several days prior adjusting your sleeping and on the day of departure, tells you when to wake, eat, sleep and drink coffee. I followed it closely going over and had virtually no jetlag, but flying Westerly that’s usually less of an issue. The trip back flying Easterly, on the same route with similar sector times was the acid test as it involved two full nights and days. Once again followed it religiously and what would normally take me a week to readjust, took about 2 days. Highly recommended but stick to the schedule. My only gripe is the price which I feel is high given it’s apparent complexity. Corporate travellers won’t baulk but leisure will probably give it a skip.
